Some of the speakers at this year's conference The antiwar movement needs to stay organised and mobilised and Stop the War's annual conference, which takes place in London on Saturday 25 April, is a chance for antiwar activists to discuss the state of the 'war on terror', plan the next steps for the movement and exchange ideas about local and national campaigning.
The last year has seen the biggest wave of protest since the invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of people up and down the country marched, lobbied and took direct action against Israel’s brutal invasion of Gaza. Barack Obama came to office on wave of anti-war opinion in the US. His election has been welcomed by millions who oppose Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
However, Obama is implementing a surge in Afghanistan which will see tens of thousands more troops sent to an unjustified and unwinnable war. The illegal US bombing of Pakistan is being escalated, further destabilising a country in political crisis. The silence of the western powers over Israel’s invasion of Gaza caused widespread anger and outrage, but Israel's barbaric treatment of Palestinians continues, with Gaza subjected to an illegal seige or unimaginable severity.
These are issues which will be discussed at Stop the War conference on 25 April. Among the keynote speakers will be Tony Benn, film director Ken Loach, ex-UK ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray, Palestinian writer and academic Karma Nabulsi and George Galloway MP.
The conference is open to delegates from affiliated organisations, delegates from local Stop the War groups and individual Stop the War members.
