STOP PRESS: Soldier defies military orders to join demonstration

Joe GlentonLance Corporal Joe Glenton, who is facing a court martial because he refuses to return to fight in Afghanistan, will defy military orders from his commanding officer and join the 24 October demonstration. "I am marching to send a message to Gordon Brown. Instead of sending more troops, he must bring them all home. I’m proud to be marching again - this time with Stop the War."

Assemble 12 noon Hyde Park: March to Trafalgar Square
Called by Stop the War Coalition, CND and BMI
The march will be lead by anti-war military families & soldiers

Speakers include: Tariq Ali, Peter Brierley, who recently refused to shake Tony Blair's hand because it had his son blood on it; Lance Cpl Joe Glenton, serving soldier facing court martial for refusing to return to Afghanistan; George Galloway MP; musician and poet Lowkey. Acclaimed songwriter Robb Johnson has written North West Frontier in support of the campaign to get the troops out of Afghanistan. It's Stop the War's song of the week and Robb will be attending Saturday's rally, as will rapper Lowkey and the King Blues band.

The majority of people in Britain want the troops out of Afghanistan now. They know this war is unwinnable and unjustifiable. The demonstration on Saturday 24 October will give voice to that majority who say the troops must come home now.

    What you can do:

  • Spread the word about the demonstration as widely as you can. Use email, texts, Facebook, Twitter;
  • Distribute demonstration leaflets to your family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues, fellow students etc;
  • Display a poster for the demonstration in your home window;
  • Join a local Stop the War group to help build support for the demonstration in your area;
  • Calling all Londoners: Help build support for the demonstration in the capital city
