Defence ministers in the Nato alliance meet in Edinburgh on Saturday 14 November to discuss the continued occupation of Afghanistan, which is waged in the name of NATO. It will get a warm welcome from Stop the War Coalition Scotland, which has organised a No to NATO demonstration calling for troops out of Afghanistan and the scrapping of Trident nuclear missiles.
With the farce of the Afghan fraudulent elections making Hamid Karzai even less legitimate as president than he was before, the continually rising number of British soldiers getting killed and Barack Obama likely to announce a second troop surge, despite knowing -- as he surely does -- that the war is unwinnable, the demonstration is very timely.
Stop the War Scotland reports a real swell of support in Edinburgh for the protest, with families of serving soldiers saying they’ll be joining the march.
Joan Humphries, whose grandson Kevin Elliott was killed while on foot patrol in the southern Afghan province of Helmand on 31 August, is coming from Dundee.
From the trade union movement, Edinburgh trades council has backed the demonstration, Edinburgh Unison has circulated all its reps urging them to attend. The Scottish TUC will be sending a speaker.
