Anti-war campaigners staged events across Britain at the weekend opposing the AUKUS military pact

Anti-war campaigners staged events across Britain at the weekend opposing the AUKUS military pact.

The pact brings Australia into the mounting US-led and British-backed cold war against China, which is already surrounded by 400 US military bases.

The events were organised by the Stop the War Coalition, which, along with the Campaign Against Nuclear Disarmament, presented a petition to 10 Downing Street on Friday opposing the pact.

And on Saturday, Stop the War organised street stalls to raise awareness.

Convener Lindsey German said: “The AUKUS pact between the US, UK and Australia will escalate tensions in the Pacific, and is part of a new cold war against China.

“Increasing militarisation and nuclear proliferation are preludes to war, not peace.

“The British government has to stop its reckless warmongering and pull back from these pacts, which are like those before the first world war.

“We should learn the lessons from the failure of the ‘war on terror’ and the defeat in Afghanistan and promote peace, not war.”
