Trump’s opposition to the deal appears to have nothing to do with Iran’s nuclear programme

Donald Trump’s calls for an end to the nuclear deal with Iran are deeply irresponsible and dangerous. The 2015 deal helped to head off a growing confrontation between Iran and the US and re-establish diplomatic relations between the Iran and the West.
Trump’s opposition to the deal appears to have nothing to do with Iran’s nuclear programme. Both US Congress and the International Atomic Energy Agency have stated that Iran is complying with the agreement. Even Trump himself has said that Iran is living up to the letter of the agreement.
Trump is trying to look tough on the world stage and to tilt the balance of power in the Middle East away from Iran at a time when the US is increasing its already considerable backing for the Saudi regime and its Gulf state allies.
Such brinkmanship risks further destabilising the Middle East and a return to a stand off with Iran. Given the level of regional and international tension centred on the Middle east such behaviour is extremely reckless.
Stop the War calls on the British government to insist that Trump climbs down and re-endorses the deal with Iran.
