We condemn the US and British bombing of Yemen, the latest in a long list of disastrous Western attacks on countries in the Middle East. Yemen is a former British colony. It is a country that has suffered nine years of brutal military assault by Saudi Arabia with the support of both Britain and the US, an aggression that was repeatedly condemned by the UN and that created the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
The US and British governments claim their attacks are in self-defence and unconnected to Israel’s genocide on the Palestinians. In fact they are attempting to punish Ansar Allah (the Houthis) for refusing to allow shipping connected to Israel through the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s actions. They are doing this while continuing to back Israel as it commits genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
This is more than hypocrisy, it is a strategic orientation in support of Israel and in pursuit of continued western control of the Middle East. The attacks have widened the war in the area and pushed the region further towards conflagration. We demand an immediate end to the bombing and that our government calls for the only action that can defuse the situation – a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israel’s brutal war against the Palestinians.
