Tony Benn was in the forefront of opposing wars, apartheid, racism and sexism. He was president of the Stop the War Coalition from 2003 up until his death on 14 March 2013. He was loved and admired by millions for his straightforward talking and for his opinions, which chimed more with theirs than with those of mainstream politicians.
