
The government is pushing through new legislation in parliament to give police new powers to restrict the right to protest based on so-called ‘cumulative disruption’. If this becomes law, the police in England and Wales will be required to consider any past protests or planned future ones in the same ‘area’ when deciding whether to impose restrictions or not allow the demonstration to go ahead.
Already the Palestine movement has had more restrictions imposed on it than any other, and four of its leaders are facing trial charged in relation to the organisation of a purely peaceful protest on 18 January last year.
